Pali fonts

For an extensive review of available Pali and Sanskrit fonts, see » Transliteration and Devanagari Fonts for Sanskrit, by Ulrich Stiehl. The Association for Insight Meditation's » Pali Font Resources page offers several ANSI and Unicode fonts suitable for working with Pali.

Here are some fonts I can personally recommend:

  • Gentium, a free Unicode font that is both elegant and pleasantly readable both on-screen and in print.
  • The » URW Palladio Pali font was custom designed to meet the Buddhist Publication Society's publishing requirements. It is an excellent font, although it works only with Unicode-compliant applications. Check the fine print of your word processing program to see if it supports Unicode.
  • K.R. Norman's MyTymes and Normyn (available at imp.lss.wisc.edu/~gbuhnema/macfonts.html).
  • Pierre Robillard's DPalatino diacritic font (for Macintosh) is excellent, and has been used for many years by Wisdom Publications in such books as The Long Discourses of The Buddha, The Middle Length Discourses of the Buddha, and The Connected Discourses of the Buddha. They are available on the web from » Columbia University.
